What is the difference between MBSR and MBCT?
They are very similar. MBSR was developed in 1979, whereas MBCT has been a more recent development and includes aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which extensive research has found to be the best approach for treating a range of mental health issues including depression and anxiety.
What do you offer in your Eight Week Mindfulness Courses at Learn Mindfulness?
We offer courses that combine Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy. This ensures that you get a good grounding in mindfulness training as well as some understanding of how some priniciple of cognitive behavioural therapy can help.
What is Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)?
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy is an eight week course that combines the eight week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course with a limited amount of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). In two significant studies it was found that MBCT significantly reduced the chance of relapse in depression for patients that had experienced three or more episodes of depression in the past. This included patients that had sometimes suffered from depression for 20 years. The Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy course is very similar in content to the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course. The main difference is the inclusion of a limited amount of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)?
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is an eight week course devised by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the UMASS Medical School in the United States of America. Since then it has spread across the world and has been found by many research studies to reduce stress, anxiety, chronic pain as well as a host of other conditions, especially those link to high stress levels. The course combines mindfulness meditation practices such as the body scan and sitting meditation with some mindful stretching exercises. Practising the homework plays an important part of the course to give the best chance for any benefits to be realised from the course.
Mindfulness is a set of techniques and approach to life that helps reduce mental and physical suffering and increase a sense of wellbeing.
